Meet Our Students

Tracy Lu

Advisor/Mentor: Scott Sell
Program Start: Fall 2016

Tracy grew up in Honolulu, HI and attended Saint Louis University for her undergraduate degree. She graduated Spring 2016 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Mathematics. She is currently in her final year of the Accelerated BS-MS Program in Biomedical Engineering and hopes to graduate in the Spring of 2017 and start a career in the biotechnology industry.

The applications of cryogels are increasingly being explored due to the potential for cell infiltration throughout the macroporous structure. Recent studies have exhibited the scaffold’s shape memory properties and resistance to shear forces when pushed through a standard needle-syringe. This project aims to utilize the same fabrication methods to create an injectable osteoconductive scaffold for bone nonunion healing. The cryogels are currently being physically characterized to determine methods for obtaining the most favorable pore size and mechanical properties. Future research will be conducted to determine the best dopants for mineralization of the scaffold.
