  • JOHN FARNAN, Mechanical Engineering
  • CHRISTIAN BARBOSA, Aerospace Engineering´╗┐

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

The challenge is to use the helium balloon to launch a paper airplane. The airplane that stays in the air (launch to landing) the longest wins!! Timing begins when the airplane completely leaves the balloon and stops when the it hits the ground.´╗┐

KEY TAKE-AWAYS

The challenge emphasizes the need for recognizing make-or-break tasks and critical issues in design. Further, it reinforces the need for rapid prototyping. Rapid prototyping is another objective of this Innovation Challenge. “Quick and Dirty” prototypes are good methods for visualizing and testing designs without wasting time and resources. One can usually sort thorough good and bad ideas and get a feel for the feasibility of a solution with a quick and dirty prototype.´╗┐
