Mission Requirements

The design of an outdoor flight of a human controlled MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) is required. The MAV should be able to fulfill the following mission profile:

  • Time from its storage case to launch ready is no more than 5 minutes
  • The MAV will be hand launched
  • it will then ascend to approximately 100m (328 ft)
  • Cruise will be up to 15 minutes to a maximum target distance of 5 km (3 miles)
  • Loiter/surveillance will be for up to 30 minutes
  • After loiter the MAV will cruise back for up to 15 minute
  • a ground landing is the final stage. The battery life will be no less than 60 minutes

Payload will consist of battery(s), camera, GPS, and control inputs. A perfectly rigid structure is not required. The full final product should be able to fit into a single man portable case, man portable defined as a container easily fitted and carried in an MOLLE  (Modular lightweight load-carrying equipment) backpack, and be assembled and in the air in 5 minutes or less for human controlled flight. Flying conditions will only be in daylight, non-rain conditions with up to moderate gusts.
