Andrea Brock (Class of 2007)
received a 2007 BMES Undergraduate Research Award at the national
Biomedical Engineering Society Conference in Los Angeles in
September. She was selected for her paper entitled
"The influence of PEG gel composition on PC12 cell behavior", which detailed research
from her senior year in Dr. Willits' lab. Congratulations
Andrea!
Students in BME430 have developed demonstrations for high school and middle school
outreach as an integral part of their course. These projects
are targeted to interest students in engineering by integrating
the topics of transport and biomedical sciences.
Descriptions and information
about these demonstrations are available
here. For more information, contact Dr. Willits.
Jason Kennedy, a current graduate student,
was awarded 1st place by
Sigma Xi in the Physical Science category for his research entitled
"Resuspension of Particulate Pollutants from Hard versus Carpeted Surfaces"
at the Graduate Research Symposium on March 30 2007.
This work was completed with Kee Hean Ong, Brett Emo, Jana Kesavan,
& Roger Lewis in the Department of Public Health. Congratulations Jason!
Jasenka Memisevic (Class of 2006)
received a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to complete her
graduate study at University of Missouri. Her project, entitled
"Design and analysis of nanostructured architectures for improved
biosensors" will be completed in Dr. Sheila Grant's laboratory at
University of Missouri. Jasenka was an active researcher
in Dr. Willits' laboratory for approximately 2.5 years while she
was an undergraduate and felt the research experience as an undergraduate
was invaluable and helpful in obtaining her fellowship. Congratulations Jasenka!
Luis Solorio (Class of 2006)
received a BMES Undergraduate Research Award at the national
Biomedical Engineering Society Conference in Chicago in
October. He was selected for his paper entitled "The effect of anode location on stimulus-evoked electromyographic monitoring", which detailed research
from his senior year in Dr. Barnett's lab. Congratulations
Luis!
Andrea Brock and Luis Solorio (Class of 2006)
were selected for the Department's "Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Senior Award" in
recognition of their outstanding achievements in scholarship, research, leadership, and service.
Congratulations Andrea and Luis!
Jacqueline Lis (Class of 2007)
received a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research for her proposal entitled:
"Developing novel materials for nerve regeneration: determination of factors important for growth." Jackie
completed her project in Dr. Willits' lab. Congratulations
Jackie!
Luis Solorio (Class of 2006)
was awarded 1st Place at Saint Louis University's Sigma Xi Research Symposium
for his undergraduate research entitled:
"Effect of anode location for stimulus-evoked electromyographic monitoring during
iliosacral screw placement using finite element modeling." Luis
completed his project in Dr. Barnett's lab. Congratulations
Luis!
Matthew Blewitt (Class of 2005, current graduate student)
received a Society for Biomaterials Undergraduate Research Award at the national
Society for Biomaterials Annual Conference in April 2006. He was selected for his paper entitled "The
effect of soluble peptide sequences on neurite extension in
three-dimensional collagen gels", which detailed research
from his junior and senior years in Dr. Willits' lab. Congratulations
Matt!
Michael Kopec (Class of 2005) presented the poster
"A finite element study of electrode location during Stimulus Evoked Electromyographic
Monitoring of Iliosacral Screw Insertion" at the 52nd Orthopaedic Research Society
meeting held in Chicago from March 19-22, 2006.

Biomedical Engineering Society Conference in Baltimore in
September. He was selected for his paper entitled "The
effect of soluble peptide sequences on neurite extension in
three-dimensional collagen gels", which detailed research
from his junior and senior years in Dr. Willits' lab. Congratulations
Matt!
Matthew Wood (Class of 2005)
received a BMES Undergraduate Research Award at the national
Biomedical Engineering Society Conference in Baltimore in
September. He was selected for his paper entitled "Novel
guidance cues for use in neural growth", which detailed
research from his junior and senior years in Dr. Willits'
lab. Congratulations Matt!
Calling ALL BME Alumni! Please
