About Dr. Alexander

Theodosios Korakianitis changed his legal name to Theodosios Alexander the summer of 2001, when he moved from the USA to the UK, because people cannot pronounce his family name. He continues publishing as T. Korakianitis and uses both names professionally.

He was educated in England and the U.S.A. He was graduated in July 1981 with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. This was followed by three Master of Science degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; in Ocean Systems Management; and in Mechanical Engineering. Then he received his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, also awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

From 1988-2001 he was on the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. From 2001-2006 he was the James Watt Professor of Thermodynamics at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. From February 2006 until August 2012 he was Professor and Chair of Energy Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London. In September 2012 he was appointed Dean of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, where he is also a Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering.

He has worked for Hellenic Shipyards, for U.S. Navy Consultants John J. McMullen Associates in Washington D.C., for Northern Research and Engineering Corporation, for McDonnell Douglas Corp. and for The Boeing Company on propulsion-system studies. He is active in several international consulting activities.

His research concentrates in thermal/fluid sciences and applications on the design of power and propulsion systems, energy conversion systems, renewable energy, engineering systems and components, with emphasis on analysis; design; and their steady, unsteady and transient performance. His personal research concentrates on unsteady thermo-fluid dynamics and unsteady transport phenomena within the above themes. His latest research is on the performance of turbomachinery and airfoils, on the development of novel engines (with substantial current government and industry research funding from the US and the UK), and on engine performance and emissions. For the last decade he has also worked on modeling the human cardiovascular system. In 2008 and again in 2009 he received the NHS Innovator of the Year Award from the UK National Health Service on design of mechanical circulatory support devices. He is currently holding over $1.5m in research funding from the UK National Institute of Health Research on related topics.

He holds two patents on biomedical devices, is co-author of a textbook on turbomachinery design, and has published over 120 research papers. The publications on the right are representative publications listed by topic, and then chronologically: fluid dynamics of power and propulsion systems; novel power plants; engine performance and emissions; modelling the human cardiovascular system; and design of motors that can be applied to mechanical circulatory support devices and ventricular assist devices.
