“Advances in Concrete” presented by Mark Luther of Holcim Inc.

On Wednesday, June 23rd, Mark Luther, MS, FACI, will present “Advances in Concrete” as part of the 2010 Civil Engineering Speaker Series at Saint Louis University. The event will be held from 11:30am-1:30pm. Registration is $60 and includes lunch and a certification of completion. The Civil Engineering Speaker Series features industry leaders from across the nation discussing global challenges and emerging trends. The Series is intended to provide a way for local engineers to earn professional development hours, which are required for P.E. recertiication.
About the Speaker
Based out of the St. Louis/Ste. Genevieve, Missouri cement plant area, Mark Luther is a Senior Technical Service Engineer for Holcim (US) Inc., a large cement company. After earning engineering degrees from Purdue University (BS civil engineering structures, ’79; MS civil engineering materials, ’81), he was a Project Engineer for the Boston R&D firm Foster-Miller Inc. (’81-’82); Project Engineer, then Technical Manager, for Elkem Materials Inc., a large silica fume company (’82-’91); and slag cement Senior Technical Advisor/ Technical Manager for first Koch Minerals Co., then Holcim (via a ’96 acquisition).
Luther has authored over two dozen papers, and conducted over 900 speeches or presentations about concrete, including topics such as troubleshooting, curing, cement making, mass concrete, high-strength, high-performance, slag cement, silica fume, pozzolans, proportioning, specifications, concrete admixtures, and durability (several aspects).
In the American Concrete Institute, Luther is a Fellow; was the Missouri Chapter ACI co-chair of the Fall ’08 Convention Committee; was President of the Missouri-area chapter (2006) and the Pittsburgh-area chapter (1991), serving full terms on the boards of each chapter; has been a member of three other ACI Chapters; chaired committees 116 (terminology (twice)) and 233 (ground slag), is a Member of committees 363 (high-strength), Associate Member of parking structures (362), and has been a member of at least eight other committees, including the Nominating Committee (twice), 211 (proportioning), 546 (repair), 547 (refractory), 232 (fly ash), and 234 (silica fume).
In ASTM, Luther is a member of committees C.01 (cement) and C.09 (concrete and aggregates), was the Formative Chair of Subcommittee C.09.27 (ground slag), is a member of subcommittees C 09.27 and C 09.24 (pozzolans), and has been a member or other subcommittees and task groups.
