Cycling for Change Comes to St. Louis
July 25, 2010
Il Monastero at Saint Louis University
This summer, Parks College Aviation Science faculty member, Stephen Belt, is taking time away from teaching to serve as the national team coordinator of Cycling for Change. Communities along the route will highlight local poverty issues, to raise awareness and funds to benefit local poverty-reducing programs. On July 24 & 25, Saint Louis University will be hosting a series of related events, including a mass, a potluck, a 25 mile circuit ride with the team and more.
About Cycling for Change
Cycling for Change, a 5000 mile bicycle pilgrimage led by a Jesuit priest from Kansas City, is a call to action for all people of goodwill to address the growth of poverty in America. Communities along the route will be encouraged to highlight local poverty issues, to raise funds to benefit local poverty-reducing programs and to invite governments, social service agencies, businesses and concerned citizens to work together to develop strategic solutions to the national problem of poverty.
On the eve of its 2010 centennial, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), the largest network of social service organizations in the nation, initiated a multi-faceted approach to reduce poverty in the United States. The CCUSA Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America stresses the need for businesses, faith-based organizations, government and individuals to come together to strategically address the systemic causes of poverty in this country.
In St. Louis, Cycling for Change aims to:
- Celebrate the CCUSA Centennial
- Promote CCUSA’s Campaign to Reduce Poverty
- Educate and engage individuals in the mission, services, and agencies of Catholic Charities St. Louis.
- Reduce poverty in our communities by raising money for St. Patrick Center.
Locally, this effort is co-sponsored by Catholic Charities St. Louis and St. Patrick Center with generous support from a CCUSA Centennial Grant.
Whether you want to ride a bike, help with our local ride, make a donation, or volunteer with a Catholic Charities agency, there are many ways you can help Reduce Poverty in America.
