Competition tests students’ engineering skills
Event Details: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., November 06, Tegeler Field
The Association of Parks College Students will host the annual “Pumpkin Launch” from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Tegeler Field on the SLU campus.
Several student teams from SLU’s Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology will compete to see who launch basketball-sized pumpkins the closest to a 12-inch round target nearly 75 feet away using a mechanical catapult built from scratch. The team that gets closest wins.
The contest may sound like all fun and games, but it’s serious stuff. Parks College prides its self on hands-on learning and education outside the classroom. The “Pumpkin Launch” is an example of engineering students putting their knowledge into practice.
The competition isn’t a free-for-all either. Like any other good sport, the “Pumpkin Launch” features rules, judges and scorekeepers.
There are also restrictions. Among them, contestants must use a something other than their hands to trigger the launch. They also cannot use pressurized devices or chemicals. And for safety reasons, sharp objects are out too.
The teams get three chances to hit the mark. The competition is expected to last 45 minutes.
The event also will include great food for sale with half the proceeds going to charity. Canned goods also will be collected at the event.
