Parks College is pleased to announce the Civil Engineering program has received full accreditation from ABET for six years through September 30, 2019. This is a newly accredited program and therefore accreditation is extended to all past graduates from this program.

Since the proposal in 2008, the Civil Engineering department has been working towards building a program and reaching accreditation. ABET accreditation requires a program to graduate its first class of students before applying for accreditation. Parks graduated the inaugural class of Civil Engineers in May 2013 and started the evaluation process immediately after.

Dean of Parks College, Theodosios Alexander, Sc.D. remarked, “We are very pleased that the program has been awarded the full six-year accreditation effective retroactively since fall 2012, thus vindicating the efforts of our faculty and the hard work of our students. Dr. Hindi and Dr. Woolschlager played major roles in the preparation for the accreditation process, and Dr. Ravindra, Parks Associate Dean, was instrumental in spearheading approval of the program. We are looking forward to expanding this crucial program as it is instrumental to the economic growth of the region and the nation.”

With almost no equipment or lab space in 2009, the program is now equipped with state-of-the-art lab facilities constructed from a generous gift from the Holloran family. The students have already created a chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers and have participated in regional competitions, including placing first in a concrete bowling ball competition. Faculty have created an impressive curriculum for prospective students that is designed to be project-based, rather than theoretical, in order to prepare students for professions in the field. K. Ravindra, Ph.D. remarked “The quality of the program is reflected in the type of employers who are seeking our graduates, the scholarships and fellowships our graduates are receiving to pursue higher studies in reputable universities, and the high percentage of students successfully passing the Fundamentals in Engineering on the first try.” Associate Professor, Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D., P.E., shared the same sentiments as Ravindra and said, “It’s been a great satisfaction to be a part of this program and watching it rise from the ground up.”

The newly appointed chair of the Civil Engineering department, Ronaldo Luna, Ph.D., believes “Early accreditation is a great sign for this emerging program.  Absolutely every Civil Engineering graduate will have an accredited degree.  I am pleased to be part of this department and to continue promoting its success.”
