Aviation Students Compete in 2016 Region VI SAFECON

Parks College Aviation students competed in the 2016 Region VI SAFECON competition, held October 15-21, 2016 at the University of Oklahoma Westheimer Airport in Norman, Oklahoma.

SLU sent 13 students to compete this year.  Senior James Colestock (pilot) and junior Jonathan Martin (safety observer) brought home first place in the navigation category of the competition, while juniors Will Gygi (pilot) and Will Aksamit (safety observer) claimed fourth in the same category.

Martin also claimed fourth in the short field landing category, with senior Nicholas Carter coming in ninth in the same category. Aksamit also placed fourth in the ground trainer category.

There were 82 participants in total and six SLU students finished in the top half of competitors. James Colestock led SLU with a 17th place finish overall.  Overall, the team placed fifth in the flight event championship.
