Daniel Tobias, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., adjunct professor and industrial advisory board member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Saint Louis University has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Glen L. Martin Practitioner Service Award from the Civil Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

This award recognizes Tobias’ distinguished service in support of civil engineering education.  The awards committee was particularly impressed by his involvement with Saint Louis University’s civil engineering program and his commitment to sharing his expertise with students.

Tobias began working as an adjunct faculty member at SLU in 2012 when SLU introduced graduate courses in civil engineering. As an example of his commitment to the next generation of civil engineers, he travels at least two hours (in each direction) from his home in Springfield, Illinois to teach structural engineering courses at Saint Louis University.

In his full-time role, Tobias serves as the Managing Structural Engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), where he manages the cast-in-place, precast and prestressed concrete programs as well as the roadway geotechnical program. In recent years, his focus has also been on research, development, refinement, and implementation in a number of areas. Some of these include: the development of multi-hazard design methods and accelerated bridge construction; initial development of light rail loading criteria for bridges; the complete rewrite of the state’s Bridge Design Manual; development and refinement of IDOT’s Earthquake Resisting System (ERS) strategy; and many others.

Additionally, Tobias has published more than 50 publications in the area of structural engineering. As a top researcher in bridges, building design, concrete consturction and materials engineering, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to civil engineering practice and education for nearly 30 years.

“Dr. Tobias embodies the qualities of the Glen L. Martin Practitioner Service Award. Not only is he a dedicated practitioner, but he serves as a resource for our students and a champion of the civil engineering program here at SLU. Our students love his real-world approach to coursework. His contributions to SLU’s civil engineering program help strengthen our program and make our students among the best in their field,” said Ronaldo Luna, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, Professor and Chair of The Department of Civil Engineering at Saint Louis University.

The award will be presented at the Civil Engineering Division’s banquet on June 27, 2017 at the 2017 ASEE Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
